Aaron Davis Hall Presents:

Eddie Palmieri y La Perfecta II
and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra12/4/04

Aaron Davis Hall, better know as Harlem's Center for the Performing Arts, celebrated its 25th Anniversary by presenting two bands that represent the panorama of Latin music in New York: Eddie Palmieri and La Perfecta II and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

The festivities commenced with the swinging sounds of the Spanish Harlem Orchestra under the direction of acclaimed pianist Oscar Hernandez. As the name implies, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra is known for combining elements of New York Salsa with the music of today.

The orchestras repertoire included stirring renditions of familiar classics such as (Tito Puente's) "Cuando Te Vea,' (Hector Lavoe's) 'La Banda,' (Pete El Conde Rodriguez's) "Pueblo Latino" and new, original material.  Vocalists Ray De La Paz, Marco Bermudez and Willie Torres engaged the audience with their snappy choreography and the band clearly demonstrated the fact that they came to play.

Elder statesman Eddie Palmieri was greeted with a resounding standing ovation. He opened his set with an improvisational piece that showcased his affinity for Latin music and jazz. Afterwards, La Perfecta II electrified the audience with hit after hit: 'Muneca,' 'La Perfecta Theme,' 'Bilongo,' 'Cuidate Compay' and 'Azucar' to name a few.

As the name implies, La Perfecta II is the latest incarnation of the original group which reigned supreme during the 60's and 70's. Much like its counterpart, La Perfecta II features the groups trademark trombone sound, driving poly rhythms and socially conscious lyrics. Furthermore, tunes such as 'Bilongo' and 'Camagueyanos Y Habaneros' demonstrates Palmieri's reverence for the rhythms of Africa and Cuba.

Despite the fact that there is no dancing allowed there was no shortage of toe-tapping, hip-shaking and clapping to the beat of the clave. In short, the joint was jumping. Needless to say, a good time was had by all.

Congratulations to the management and staff of Aaron Davis Hall for presenting the artistry of the Harlem Community to its residents, New York and the world.
